Nick Reiner, the celebrity couple’s 32-year-old son, was booked at 9.15pm on Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records show.
He’s being held on $4 million bail. It’s not immediately clear what charges he faces.
Police are investigating the deaths as homicides and are questioning a family member. The bodies of the director (78), and his wife (68), were discovered by their daughter Romy, according to reports.
Reiner directed a string of iconic movies, including This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” a family spokesperson said in a statement.
LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said the investigation is being handled by the department’s Robbery Homicide Division, and would “continue over the coming days.”
Paramedics arrived at the Brentwood home after receiving a call from inside the home, Hamilton said. There was no sign of forced entry, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A cause of death will be made public by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, Hamilton said.
As an actor, Reiner was best remembered for his role on the TV comedy “All in the Family” as Mike “Meathead” Stivic, the son-in-law and liberal foil of the lead character, working-class bigot Archie Bunker, played by Carroll O’Connor.
His wife, Michele, was at one time a photographer who captured the image of Donald Trump that appears on the cover of his book “Trump: The Art of the Deal.”
Rob Reiner, a native of New York City and son of the late comedy writer and actor Carl Reiner, also was well known for his political activism.
In the 2004 presidential election, he backed Democratic candidate John Kerry and featured in advertisements taking aim at incumbent President George W. Bush. Reiner also supported Democratic presidential hopefuls Al Gore and Hillary Clinton.
Reiner was first married to Penny Marshall, who played Laverne in “Laverne & Shirley” and was also a producer and director. He later married actor Michele Singer, with whom he had three children.
The famous couple left behind four children: Tracy, Jake, Nick and Romy.
Tracy, the 61-year-old adopted daughter of Reiner and biological daughter of his first wife Penny Marshall, told NBC News that she had seen the couple over the weekend for a family gathering.
“I came from the greatest family ever,” she told NBC News. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
Jake (34), is the biological son of Michele Singer and Reiner. He built a career in the entertainment industry.
Nick meanwhile has spoken openly about his struggles with addiction — which later became the basis for the 2015 film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote and his father directed.
Romy (28), is the youngest of the couple’s children and describes herself on her website as a “photographer, artist, and writer”.
