Sligo’s John Murphy is the latest candidate to throw his hat in the ring to replace Jarlath Burns as President of the GAA.

With Leinster chairman Derek Kent and Tipperary’s Ger Ryan already declared, Murphy accepted a nomination from his home club Tubbercurry at the Sligo GAA convention on Monday.

Murphy, aiming to become the first Sligo person to hold the position, has a long background in GAA matters and served as Sligo chairperson 20 years ago.

At the same Congress that saw Burns confirmed as President, Murphy was elected as a representative of congress and trustee of the association when he defeated Cavan’s Tom Reilly by 147 votes to 118. He is also a former Connacht GAA President.

Before that, he played for Sligo and helped them to only their second-ever Connacht title in 1975 following a replay win in Castlebar. He also served as a selector for the county after that.

Burns was elected as the 41st President of the association and his three-year term will end in 2027.

GAA Congress will vote next February for his successor.
