A new 1970s-set thriller starring Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke has released an action-packed new trailer.

Ponies, which lands on Peacock on January 15, comes from New Girl’s David Iserson and The Flight Attendant’s Susanna Fogel and follows two women who become spies following the murder of their husbands.

Alongside Clarke, it also features The White Lotus’ Haley Lu Richardson, Sandman’s Adrian Lester, and Tar’s Artjom Gilz, among others.

An official synopsis reads: “Moscow, 1977. Two PONIES (“persons of no interest” in intelligence speak) work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy.

“That is, until their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR, and the pair become CIA operatives. Bea (Clarke) is an over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Her cohort, Twila (Richardson), is a small-town girl who is as abrasive as she is fearless.

“Together, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery that made them widows in the first place.”

Ahead of the series’ premiere, a first trailer shows Clarke and Richardson in character, beginning with the duo walking together and casually discussing their husbands’ intelligence work.

It is revealed that an airplane crashed with the two men on board, leaving the women devastated and searching for answers.

In a bid to get what they want, they agree to do intelligence work for the government, with Twila pointing out: “We’re women, people only look at us if they want to have sex with us or marry us, and that’s it. No one would ever suspect us of anything.”

An action-packed montage follows with the women setting fire to a bar, attending glitzy parties, and getting as close to the enemy as possible – but at what cost?

The cast for the eight-episode series also includes Saturday Night’s Nicholas Podany, Silence’s Petro Ninovskyi, and Very Important People’s Vic Michaelis.

The Village’s Mike Daniels acts as an executive producer alongside Black Mirror’s Jessica Rhoades.
