Tyla has undoubtedly left social media reeling after posting an Instagram video of herself walking a tiger.
The South African pop star posted a video of herself walking a tiger on a leash with effortless ease. The video, which she posted on Instagram with the caption “Twin, is it Al or just 2 bad b’s,” has already gained more than 8 million views in a short time.
Shortly after, comments were flooded with complaints that this video glorifies animal exploitation. For some people, this image went from a fashionable statement to a deeply disturbing one.
One commenter said, “If you think this is aesthetic or any good, you’re disgusting. This video is disgusting and so disturbing. Animals are not your aesthetic. And a wild animal on a leash?! Put the tiger back where it belongs.”
“Another commenter took a much more aggressive stance, pointing a finger at the industry in which acts such as this one are perpetuated, saying, “This is animal exploitation. That is not cunty, and it is lame af she thinks this is cunty. Animals are drugged out of their minds to make them docile. That animal shouldn’t be on a chain. F this.”
Other people echoed a similar sentiment, fearing that the tiger was being used as a prop rather than as a living creature. “This is so ignorant. Does she know these animals are starved? She thinks it’s some accessory.”
The outcry was loud and relentless. For those criticizing her, this video epitomized a problem in this culture of celebrities, where wild animals can be used for shock, luxury, and views without consequences.
On the other side, Tyla’s supporters remained united in defense.
Some people thought this outrage had nothing to do with Tyla because she is not responsible for how animals are kept at the zoo. “People on IG are mad over a tiger that would eat them if they got a chance. She went to the zoo and took some pics. I do not see a problem with this in any way.”
Some people were drawn to the symbolism and the pop star nonsense of it all. “The idea of being named Tyla with a fan base named Tygers, walking a tiger,”
And, of course, some fans wished this moment could have been amplified a bit further, too. “She needed to do this on the Met Gala steps!” For devotees, this video exudes passion, otherworldliness, and pop-star attitude in abundance. For them, this is a spectacle rather than a statement.
