A man who says he is “Ireland’s most honest food reviewer” visited the new Slim Chickens in Dundrum Town Centre and said the price of his food was “mad”.

The big American fast food branch recently opened its first restaurant in the Republic of Ireland and the content creator known as Paul_IsItWorth gave it a try.

He ordered a chicken tender meal, gravy and a pot of mac and cheese and he was unimpressed by the total bill.

The three chicken tenders and chips cost €14.25 and he added the gravy for €3.75 and Paul reflected: €18 and then €5 for mac and cheese. €23 for fast food now? Mad money isn’t it?”

Paul then revealed he was invited to the official launch but declined the offer so he could pay for his meal and do a more authentic review.

And things did not start well when he opened up his mac and cheese. He said: “Oh my God, that looks rotten. That looks like prison food. The colour is interesting, it just looks kind of processed.”

He added: “Can you smell that? Oh that’s pungent. I hate that. Oh my. If you are coming down here man, just go for the chicken option, holy lord, that looks like sick. That is rotten. Holy lord, I can’t explain to you how bad that is.”

Paul then moved on to the tenders, noting how small they looked considering the meal cost him over €14.

He said the size wasn’t a problem, because bigger pieces in his view tended to be pumped with water, but he believed there should have been five included in the meal.

As for the taste, he said: “Scalding hot. The breading on it is lovely, and it is juicy chicken, it really is. They are not frozen, you can tell straight away.”

He then said the Slim Chickens sauce was “sensational” but added that the gravy was “not great at all” despite the food overall being “pretty damn fresh”.

And summing up his feelings, he said: “The size of that meal is ridiculously small. €14.25 for that and a little sauce like that? The markup they’re making is ridiculous.

“I think the taste is decent enough but I think it was way too small for what you’re getting. €23 is crazy money for fast food. Maybe I am getting too old now. I remember fast food used to be like €8 or €9 and you would be satisfied with it.

“€23 for this? You would get a meal in a restaurant for this.”

Giving it a rating, he finished with: “Price, taste, experience, I think this is ok, I don’t think it is great, I am going to go 6.2 out of ten. That’s a fair score for this. Like it is solid enough food but it is too small for what you’re getting.

“If you are looking for value for money, this isn’t it. Another American food chain coming over and disappointing me.”

After posting the video, which you can watch in full here, one person replied: “15 quid for three poxy tenders and a handful of chips! Complete rip!”

Another said: “I just checked the U.S. site — the same meal costs $12.79, which is about €11. Still overpriced for what you get, but I’d bet my bottom dollar the portion in the States is much more generous. These franchises are here to rip people off, plain and simple.”

A third said: “14 quid for that is absolutely outrageous behaviour.”
