Aerial photos show a bird’s-eye view of the barren site of a former family pub in Galway city after the beloved building was bulldozed to the ground this past week.

Tonery’s Bar in Bohermore had been in the city for decades and was one of Galway’s last family-run pubs.

However, the iconic bar is no more after it was razed to the ground last week to make way for a major new hotel development.

The last owner of the pub, Tom Tonery, took over the reins back in 1985 from his father Jim. Since then, it continued to be a beloved spot for many locals in the area.

The pub will be replaced by a 163-bedroom hotel spanning four floors facing Bohermore Road, with a further two storeys on the sloping site to the rear.

The plans were first put forward by Carra Shore Hotel Limited back in 2023, initially putting forward plans for 182 bedrooms before scaling it back 163.

Permission was granted with a total of 26 conditions attached, including that the hotel would incorporate the use of Gaeilge signage within the development.

The doors of the beloved Bohermore pub were first opened by Jim Tonery on June 5, 1959.

As legend has it, when the pub ran out of beer on their first night open and was known as ‘the pub with no beer’ for a while after.

The demolition of Tonery’s Bar marks the end of an era for the pub and its devoted customers.
