While they have always been a hugely popular item in this country, it seems that the popularity of GAA jerseys has exploded in recent years. It is difficult to walk down a busy street without spotting the likes of a Kerry, Mayo, or Dublin kit.
Of course, the development of collecting such jerseys is a relatively recent phenomenon. The apparel worn by teams were not readily available for purchase for much of the history of the GAA.
As it turns out, even the players involved have struggled to get their hands on items from those previous eras.

Pat Spillane Has One Big GAA Jersey Regret About His Kerry Career
Pat Spillane had one of the most storied inter-county GAA careers in history, winning eight All-Irelands during his time with Kerry. However, it turns out that he does not have that many mementos from those days in his possession at the moment.
Speaking on the Indo GAA podcast, Spillane admitted that one of his big regrets is not holding on to more of his Kerry jerseys from his time as a player, many of which he either swapped with opposition players or simply gave away.
There is one in the bar now belonging to me, but I have no jerseys. It is something (I regret), my son Pat loves collecting jerseys.
It is one of the regrets I have. At the time it sounded like a great idea to exchange jerseys. There were some lovely jerseys, I remember Derry had a white one with a red stripe in 76 or 77 and I swapped that.
But all those Dublin jerseys and Cork jerseys, when you look at them they mean nothing at all. I’d love to have some of the Kerry jerseys…
It’s a small world. One of the new members of the Sligo management team with Kerry connections said to Pat Jr ‘believe it or not, your dad brought me upstairs in the bar and gave me one of his Kerry jerseys’.
I must have given a lot of them away.
It is interesting to hear that Pat Spillane has struggled to get his hands on his Kerry jerseys, especially when you consider how long his inter-county career was.
For those who are lucky enough to be in possession of them, they are certainly quite the bit of GAA memorabilia.
