The Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit (RPU) say they have detected twelve drivers today exceeding the legal speed limit in a 100KPH zone.

One motorists was clocked at 131Kph.

The 24-hour National #SlowDown Day operation is being carried out by An Garda Síochána, in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

“They (Letterkenny RPU) detected twelve drivers exceeding the legal speed limit in a speed zone of 100KPH and the majority of the drivers they stopped explained that they were just caught up in the Christmas rush,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Please remember that when you choose to drive at speed on the roads, you run the risk of not seeing another Christmas. Fixed charge penalty notices will now issue”.

In addition, three drivers were also given fixed charge penalty notices by the Letterkenny RPU after they were observed holding/using their mobile phone while driving.

“Get to your destination safely this Christmas. #SlowDown. Do not hold/use your mobile phone while driving”.
