High pressure is expected to dominate for most of Ireland over the festive periodSome areas will be hit by strong winds on Christmas morning

With just hours to go before the big day, Christmas Day swimmers have been urged to exercise caution on their annual chilly dip as some parts of Ireland will experience some strong winds tomorrow, December 25.

There is little to no chance of a white Christmas this year as high pressure is expected to dominate over the festive period, though temperatures will drop to -3C in some areas at night.

Forecaster Alan O’Reilly, who mans the ever-popular @CarlowWeather account on X, has issued a warning about the winds in two areas on Christmas morning.

He posted: “Windy on East and Southeast coasts Christmas Day so take care if you going for a festive swim.”

Dry and settled conditions are forecast to see us through to the end of 2025, meaning that Santa Claus won’t have too much in the way of unfavourable conditions to contend with.

There may be the risk of frost and icy patches in the early hours of the mornings over the coming days, however.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: “Mostly clear skies for Santa and his reindeer tonight, Christmas Eve, with just patchy cloud near some eastern and southern coasts. Cold, with lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees generally, with frost and icy patches forming on untreated surfaces, in a mostly light east to northeast or variable breeze. Less cold and mostly frost free along the east coast though, with lowest temperatures there of around 1 to 5 degrees in a mostly moderate east to northeast breeze.

“Tomorrow, Thursday, Christmas Day, will be a dry and bright day for many with sunny spells for most. It may be cloudier at times near eastern and southern coasts. Chilly, with daytime highs of around 4 to 7 degrees and feeling colder, especially along eastern and southern coasts with an added wind chill effect from moderate, occasionally fresh, and gusty east to northeast winds. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate.

“Cold and mostly clear on Thursday night, Christmas night, with just patchy cloud, mainly in the east. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees generally, with frost and icy patches forming on untreated surfaces, and some patches of mist and fog too. Less cold near the east coast with lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees. Light to moderate east to northeast or variable breezes, fresh at times along eastern and southern coasts.”
