A driver was clocked in Limerick travelling over twice the speed limit in a rural village and was among those detected speeding during An Garda Síochána’s Christmas Road Safety Campaign.

An Garda Síochána carried out a 24-hour nationwide speed enforcement operation on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, as part of National Slow Down Day.

The initiative was carried out in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders.

The operation coincided with increased road use during the Christmas holiday period.

From Monday, December 15 to Sunday, December 21, 2025, nearly 5,400 drivers were detected for speeding offences by speedvans and members of An Garda Síochána.

Among the highest speeds recorded nationally was 122km/h in a 60km/h zone in Oola, Co Limerick.

Other detections included 95km/h in a 50km/h zone in Dublin, 144km/h in an 80km/h zone in Donegal, 192km/h in a 100km/h zone in Waterford and 137km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M1 in Louth.

An Garda Síochána said these Slow Down Days are conducted several times each year and are “aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of speeding.”
