Met Eireann has warned that Ireland will endure a bitterly cold end to the year, with temperatures set to plummet well below freezing over the coming days.

Will it will remain largely dry next week as punters head out to celebrate New Year’s Eve, revellers will have to wrap up warm, with the thermometer expected to fall to -3C.

According to Met Eireann’s latest forecast, it is set to be rather cloudy today but staying mostly dry, though there will be some patches of drizzle will near southern coasts.

Highest temperatures of 4C to 8C or 9C are expected in a mostly light northeast breeze, more moderate at times near some eastern and southern coasts.

Tonight will be mostly dry and cloudy with the chance of isolated drizzle patches, mainly in the east and south. Lowest temperatures of 0C to 4C are forecast, but it will be a little less cold near some eastern coasts, in a light northeast or variable breeze.

Temperatures will drop to -3C on Tuesday

It will remain largely cloudy and dry on Monday, though with a few patches of light rain and drizzle, while it will be brighter in Ulster and north Connacht which will see some sunny spells. We can expect highest temperatures of 3C to 7C degrees in a light to moderate northeast breeze.

It will be generally dry and cloudy with clear spells mainly in the north and west on Monday night, while isolated patches of drizzle will continue in the east and south.

Met Eireann has said it will be cold under clear spells with frost developing in lowest temperatures in the north and west of -1C to 2C. It will be less cold elsewhere with lowest temperatures of 2C to 6C in light to moderate northeast winds.

According to Met Eireann, it will be cloudy at first on Tuesday, though bright or sunny spells will develop away from eastern and southern areas through the day.

Most areas will be dry, though with the odd spot of drizzle in the south and east, with highest temperatures of 3C in the north to 8C in the south in light to moderate northeast winds.

The national forecaster has warned that it be cold and dry night on Tuesday with clear spells and widespread frost developing. Some fog or freezing fog will develop also in a light easterly or variable breeze, with lowest temperatures of -3C to 1C.

Looking ahead to New Year’s Eve, Met Eireann has warned that it will be “a frosty start to the last day of 2025,” with some fog or freezing fog slow to clear.

The good news for those heading out to ring in the new year is that it is expected to stay dry with sunny spells. It will be a cold day, however, with temperatures of just 2C to 6C in a light variable breeze.

It will be cloudier to start off 2026 with scattered patches of light rain and drizzle spreading from the north on Thursday.

After a cold start, it will turn slightly milder than recently with highest temperatures of 5C to 9C in moderate westerly winds.
