Clodagh Burke will be hailed as the player who scored the winner, but it was Athenry’s impregnable defence that powered the westerners to All-Ireland glory in Thurles.

Olwen Rabbitte, Dervla Higgins and goalkeeper Laura Freeney were impeccable along the spine of the Galway club’s defence as they conceded the first point and then turned around to lead by 0-7 to 0-3 after 25 minutes of play on frosty soil in Thurles.
