Parents have been advised not to feed the affected products to infants or young childrenUrgent recall of popular baby formula

An urgent recall has been issued for a number of batches of SMA baby formula, and related products, after the potential presence of a dangerous toxin was detected.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) released details of the recall on Monday after being notified of the health risks by Nestle.

A spokesperson for the FSAI said: “Nestlé is recalling the below batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula products due to the possible presence of cereulide.

“Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale.”

Cereulide is a dangerous toxin that is produced by Bacillus cereus during the growth phase of food, particularly starchy foods such as pasta and rice.

Consumption of food products containing cereulide toxin could potentially lead to nausea and severe vomiting. Symptoms may appear within five hours and any illness associated with the toxin can last between six and 24 hours.

Nestle has advised any customers who have purchased any of the implicated batches to make contact with them via the online form here. Those affected are encouraged to share a photograph of the product along with the batch code. The Nestle careline can also be contacted on 1800 931 832.

Retailers are asked to remove any of the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at the point-of-sale.

Wholesalers and distributors are also requested to make contact with affected customers and recall the implicated batches. It’s also requested to provide a point-of-sale recall notice to customers.

Meanwhile parents, guardians and caregivers have been advised not to feed the implicated formula to infants or young children.
