While the current Ireland squad has depth in a number of options, the relative lack of options in midfield must be a concern for Heimir Hallgrimsson ahead of the World Cup play-offs.
Ireland have long lacked quality in that position, something that has cost them dearly on occasion in recent years. Those issues are now even further exasperated after the news that Josh Cullen is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an ACL injury at Burnley.
That means that Will Smallbone’s fitness will be important ahead of the game in Czechia, with the 25-year old having had his own injuries this season. He has been out of action since suffering a hamstring issue back in October during his loan spell at Millwall.
The player is still out of action, but he is already being linked with a move elsewhere in the near future.

Ireland Star Being Lined Up For Summer Move Despite Recent Injury
Sports Boom are reporting that Sheffield United are keen to sign Will Smallbone this summer, with manager Chris Wilder a long-term admirer of the Ireland midfielder.
Smallbone is likely to remain at Millwall for the remainder of the season, at which point he will return to parent club Southampton. It is thought that the Blades will then make a move for the player, having come close to signing him on one or two occasions in recent seasons.
The Irishman has spent his entire career as a Southampton player, having come through the youth ranks at the club. However, he has been in and out of favour at St Mary’s and may feel that this summer will be the ideal time to move on.
Consistent playing time will be important for him moving forward, especially if he aims to nail down a consistent starting place at international level. For now, he will be aiming to play his way back to fitness ahead of the play-offs in a couple of months.
