Netflix has given subscribers a glimpse of what’s in store for the third series of a “disturbing” drama that features a Sons of Anarchy legend.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy is returning with his latest horror anthology series Monster for a third outing.

The acclaimed franchise explores the chilling cases of some of the globe’s most notorious murderers, with the first series focusing on Jeffrey Dahmer and the second examining brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez.

Now Monster is making a comeback with its third series titled The Ed Gein Story, centring on the infamous 1950s serial killer who inspired pivotal scenes in classic horror films such as Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs.

Netflix teases: “Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho.

“In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm – hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare.

“Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein’s perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades.”

The chilling trailer opens with a woman declaring: “There’s something real dark about you Eddie Gein.”

Accompanied by Pet Shop Boys’ It’s A Sin, the preview becomes increasingly disturbing as he’s later shown dressed as his deceased mother whilst wearing her skin.

Whilst brandishing his victims’ skin, Ed remarks: “I just feel like I’m a puzzle and none of the pieces fit.”

The trailer concludes with Ed once more dancing whilst draped in human flesh, chillingly declaring to someone: “You’re the one who can’t look away.”

Taking on the role of the notorious serial killer is actor Charlie Hunnam, widely recognised for his portrayal of Jax Teller in the acclaimed FX series Sons of Anarchy.

He’s accompanied by Big Bang Theory star Laurie Metcalf, The Night Manager’s Tom Hollander, and The Crown actress Lesley Manville.

Netflix viewers have flocked to YouTube to express both their enthusiasm and admiration for Hunnam’s shocking transformation into Ed Gein.

One viewer commented: “Charlie is going to do a phenomenal portrayal of Ed Gein. Such a Good Actor in everything he is in.”

Another remarked: “How does Ryan Murphy sleep after creating all these horrid and disturbing images? Dude’s a genuinely talented filmmaker.”

A third declared: “The makeup department deserves a raise ASAP”, whilst another fan noted: “I didn’t even recognize Charlie at first.”

One user predicted: “This is gonna be the best Monster series so far”, as someone else exclaimed: “This trailer scared the s**t out of me!”.

“I can’t imagine how terrifying this season is going to be…and I’m here for it!”

Monster: The Ed Gein Story premieres on Friday, October 3, on Netflix.
