There has been a significant increase in wild deer coming off the local hills onto roads throughout the Achill parish.

That includes on to the Achill–Mulranny road and the Achill and Currane peninsula.

It has led to a number of serious road traffic incidents, with cars  damaged and, in some cases, people injured and hospitalised.

As part of a fact-finding exercise to help address this growing road safety concern, the Achill IFA is asking local people to share information on any car–deer collisions or near misses they have experienced on Achill roads.

They are seeking the approximate date, location, type of damage, and estimated cost of repairs where applicable, or details of near-miss incidents (where and when).

No names or personal details will be used, all information gathered will be treated anonymously and gathered solely to help build an accurate picture of the issue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact James Kilbane, Achill IFA Secretary, and James spoke to Midwest News Editor about the scale of the problem locally…
