Emergency services were called to a fire at the Penneys store on West Street in Drogheda earlier this evening.

First reports of the fire started to circulate shortly after 6pm, with West Street closed as a result of the incident. Fire Brigade personnel inspected the vacant premises next door, which until late last year was a Dunnes Stores grocery outlet.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire or the extent of any damage to the store.

Crowds gathered outside the premises as staff worked to evacuate the building. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Members of the fire brigade attended the scene and have been contacted for comment.

As of 7.30pm this evening, fire alarms were still sounding inside the shop
