Jessie Buckley won Best Actress at the Golden Globes for her performance in Hamnet, on a night when the historical drama also won the coveted Best Picture award.
The biggest winners at the ceremony were the Netflix crime drama Adolescence and the comedy thriller One Battle After Another, each winning four.
Buckley had been the favourite to win Best Actress, Drama, but Hamnet – an adaptation of the bestseller of the same name by Coleraine-born author Maggie O’Farrell – winning Best Picture, Drama was a surprise, as many had tipped the supernatural horror Sinners.

Accepting her award at the Beverly Hilton, in Los Angeles, Buckley saluted Hamnet director Chloé Zhao, co-star Paul Mescal, author O’Farrell, and all the cast and crew of the film, which tells the story of Agnes and William Shakespeare’s lost son.

“It was such an extraordinary set to be part of because we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived, and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, a mostly Polish crew, beside our British family,” Buckley said.
The Killarney-born star saluted “the incredible women I am honoured to stand beside in this category” as she clutched her award.
“I mean, Julia Roberts, you are, like, a hero to us all, thank you,” she continued. “Jennifer (Lawrence), Renate (Reinsve), Eva (Victor), Tessa (Thompson) – God, I’d watch you anytime, anywhere. You blow my mind.”

“My husband, he’s really been enjoying the free canapés and cocktails, so thank you so much for having us along!” she laughed.
“This is a real, real honour,” Buckley concluded. “I love what I do, and I love being part of this industry. Thank you.”
Adolescence was named Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television, and there were acting awards for stars Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, and Erin Doherty.
