A family-run Cork shoe shop business is closing its store in Cork city centre as it prepares for a big business change. O’Dwyer’s Footwear has been in business for over 60 years, and is currently running a big closing down sale at its Oliver Plunkett Street shop.
O’Dwyers was established by Florence O’Dwyer in Midleton in 1960. While the shoe store is closing after decades on Oliver Plunkett street, the team has assured customers they’ll still be able to shop the designer footwear collections they love at their popular Shoe Suite shop on Maylor Street.
Teasing the opening of a new location in Douglas in the coming months, a poster has been displayed at the Oliver Plunkett St store confirming the closure. It reads: “O’Dwyer’s and The Shoe Suite are now one. Enjoy the same team, same service, and the same great brands at The Shoe Suite, 16/17 Maylor Street. Douglas Store opening March 2026.”
The retail unit at 114 Oliver Plunkett Street has gone up for rent with Savills. The 79sqm ground floor shop is in an ideal location in the centre of one of the busiest shopping streets in the city. Letting agent Lia Dennehy says the location: “has high footfall and benefits from being pedestrianised. Oliver Plunkett Street has an eclectic mix of retailers, which include international, national, and local business. There is a mix of boutique retail and strong food and beverage offering.”
O’Dwyer’s Footwear also has a wholesale business, designing and distributing men’s shoes under the brand Mezlan, meanwhile they also run shoe shops in Midleton and Waterford city.
