A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection to the fatal arson attack that killed two people in Co Offaly last month.

Tadgh Farrell (4) and his grandaunt Mary Holt (60) died after a petrol bomb was thrown through the living room window of the family home in Castleview Park, Edenderry, Co. Offaly, on December 6.

The child’s grandmother Pauline, who was babysitting Tadhg alongside her sister, suffered serious burn injuries in the blaze and remains hospitalised.

It has been confirmed by gardaí that a man was arrested on Wednesday amid the ongoing investigation into the attack.

A Garda spokesperson added: “He is currently detained on suspicion of murder under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in the midlands.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

It is understood that the garda probe has been investigating a potential link between the incident and an attack on a gang associate in the Midlands Prison hours earlier.

Last month, a total of five prisoners, including Tadhg’s father, Aaron Holt (27), were arrested by gardaí and quizzed about the circumstances surrounding the prison altercation.
