Martin O’Neill admitted that his side weren’t at the races despite winning on Wednesday night.

Celtic narrowly beat Falkirk 1-0 as Benjamin Nygren’s header from Arne Engels’ corner separated the two teams.

It was by no means a classic but it does keep the pressure on Hearts, who are still six points clear after beating St Mirren.

For now, Celtic are back up to second in the table and performances will have to improve drastically, but O’Neill is prepared for the task that lies ahead.

Martin O’Neill thought Celtic looked ‘uncomfortable’

After impressing in the win against Dundee United, the Bhoys spent most of the game under the cosh.

One promise he made was that his side will play better and that they were lucky to go in front.

He told BBC Sports Scotland: “Falkirk had some good chances in the first half and on another night they might have scored.

“We were fortunate to go in 1-0 ahead at half time. We hadn’t played particular well.

“I thought the second half we started to improve a bit and got a bit tighter.

“Overall, delighted to win, but we can play much better.

“It is only 72 hours since we played brilliantly against Dundee United.”

Martin O’Neill hits back at transfer question

Transfer news has also documented the headlines in recent weeks and seem to be doing O’Neill’s head in.

After confirming that he has vetoed some signings, the Northern Irishman defended claims that the board aren’t helping him and that they have been looking at plenty of targets.

“That’s not the case at all for the board, the board have been very helpful. He told Premier Sports.

“Part of the problem is that I have been looking at players and until I recently I hadn’t had that in mind.

“I’m getting great help from the backroom staff. We’re pretty hopeful.

“Please don’t press me, don’t press me in that sense.”
