A prisoner has escaped from custody in Cork city. Gardaà are working with the Irish Prison Service to investigate after a man fled from lawful custody yesterday while being brought to Cork Prison.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, Thursday January 15, and officials are now working to track him down. It’s understood the man was not yet behind bars at Cork Prison, but that he was in custody and was in the process of being brought to prison when he escaped and fled the scene. It’s understood he was being brought to prison in relation to an immigration issue.
A spokesperson for An Gardaà SÃochána confirmed that an incident occurred on Thursday afternoon where a “prisoner escaped from lawful custody in Cork city yesterday afternoon, Thursday 15 th January 2026. An Garda SÃochána continues to liaise with the Irish Prison Service and investigations are ongoing.”
