Limerick has the third highest burglary numbers in Ireland, according to court data

Limerick has had the third highest amount of people before the courts for burglary offenses in the country in the first nine months of 2025, according to recent figures released by the Irish Courts Service.

A total of 1,534 people were brought before the Irish courts for burglary in the first 9 months of 2025 – 83 of which came before the Limerick District and Circuit Courts.

Limerick ranks as the third highest county for burglary offences before the courts, after the Dublin courts (622 cases of burglary), and Cork courts (95 cases of burglary).

Member of European Parliament Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has stated that the winter months and dark evenings are the “peak time for burglars committing offences”.

Ní Mhurchú has called for a range of measure to tackle burglary including an end to the practice of letting burglars out on temporary release from our prisons. According to figures provided by the Irish Prison Service, 38 prisoners convicted of burglary were out on temporary release on June 23, 2025.

The MEP has also called on Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan to put forward a robust plan to tackle the small number of repeat burglars who are having a profound impact on communities – in particular rural communities – across Ireland.
