
Crafty Ladies sewing group recently raised €2,000 for Seal Rescue Ireland.

The group hand crafted an array of items to raffle off.


A charity sewing group in Gorey recently raised €2,000 with their unique crafts to donate to Seal Rescue Ireland charity in Courtown.
Celebrating their tenth year in operation, Crafty Ladies recently held a monster raffle, giving out around 25 handcrafted items from tickets sold across various locations in Gorey including the Main Street in Gorey, Gorey Credit Union and several other places in Courtown.
They group recently met with Seal Rescue Ireland to mark the donation with a cheque presentation, to celebrate raising €2,000 for the Courtown-based charity. The sewing group has previously raised funds for the NWSPCA and RNLI services.
Frances Dunbar, Chairperson of the group said they were delighted with the money raised for the charity and spoke about the decision to raise funds for Seal Rescue Ireland – to highlight their status and promote the importance of seal protection.
“My husband went down there one day and when he came back, he said: ‘The next fundraiser you do will have to be for the Seal Sanctuary because it just gets you when you’re down there’, Frances said.

The crafty ladies they are, around 14 members of the group came together to sew a wide array of items including a large guilts, blankets, bags. “In the summer we decided we were going to raise funds for the seals – we’re all crafty people in all different areas, sewing, knitting, crochet, painting and all sorts so we all made a couple of items each to raffle with the tickets,” Frances said.
Frances thanked those in the community for their support with the annual raffle fundraiser and hopes to continue raising awareness for charities in Wexford with their handmade crafts. Crafty Ladies host weekly sessions at Mary Ward Lane at Gorey Youth Needs Centre.
Seal Rescue Ireland in Courtown is the only seal rescue in the country and is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and the release of sick, injured or orphaned seals.
