Ballygunner achieved a major milestone over the weekend, with the club winning their second ever All-Ireland club title after an impressive victory over Loughrea at Croke Park.

‘The Gunner’ have been a formidable force for quite some time now, although it would take them until the 2020s to finally get their hands on an All-Ireland. Having won the competition for the first time in 2022, they will fancy their chances of adding a couple more over the coming seasons.

Of course, that is assuming that their dominance within their own county continues. Ballygunner have won 12 Waterford senior titles on the spin. As well as that, their second team would win the premier intermediate crown in 2025.

That left the Waterford County Board in an awkward position ahead of 2026, although it seems as though that issue has now been resolved.

Waterford County Board Make Controversial Ballygunner Second Team Decision

John Fogarty of the Irish Examiner is reporting that Ballygunner will be allowed to field two teams in the 2026 Waterford Senior Hurling Championship.

There had been question marks over whether the same club should be allowed to enter two teams in the same competition. However, it is now said that the county board will permit the move.

The report suggests that Ballygunner will agree to the move, despite some ‘reluctance’ in the club about doing so.

The county board are said to have decided that there will be no guarantee that the two Ballygunner teams will be drawn into separate groups. There will also be no requirement that their respective fixtures will avoid time clashes.

This move is sure to cause quite a bit of debate both in Waterford and further afield. It will be interesting to see what impact it has once the championship gets underway later this year.
