Dakota and Elle Fanning share many things: Genetics and prolific child acting careers among them. But last night, the sisters diverged in their fashion sense—namely, their choice of It bags.
Ahead of Elle’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, the Fannings spent last night at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, where they each opted for almost all-black looks. Dakota cocooned herself in a black coat, which she styled with wide-legged trousers and square-toe boots. Elle, meanwhile, wore a vintage Romeo Gigli coat with a brown velvet collar from the fall 1989 collection, over black trousers and pointy-toe shoes.

While they were aligned on (mostly) monochromatic looks, the sisters had different dogmas about their bags. Dakota chose a loud and proud It bag, carrying a slouchy black Balenciaga City bag in the crook of her elbow. Elle, meanwhile, went the if you know, you know route, toting a sleek Dalia baguette from The Row.
It’s a question we all must ask ourselves when it comes to our bag of choice: Will you opt for the canonized pick that’s sure to come and go from the trend cycle, or would you prefer an under-the-radar pick with equal parts longevity and anonymity? Basically, are you an Elle or a Dakota?
