Five teenage boys have been arrested following an alleged serious sexual assault on a schoolgirl.
The attack was at least partially recorded and the video was circulated.
And the video was sent to the young alleged victim, it is understood.
The five boys were arrested on Tuesday.
They were released without charge pending files being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The DPP will then decide whether to bring a criminal prosecution against the boys.
The alleged teenage victim met her alleged attackers with friends in Dublin city centre.
The group were consuming alcohol before the alleged serious sexual assaults by a number of boys on the girl, it is understood.
The investigation is being led by the Divisional Protective Services Unit. Gardaà in these units are specially trained to deal with sexual crime, child protection, domestic abuse and human trafficking.
A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner: “All five persons arrested and detained were questioned in respect of the alleged offence and have been released without charge, pending a file to the DPP.”
The juveniles were interviewed by specialist garda child interviewers.
