Neighbourly life has always played a meaningful role in Irish communities, but the way we connect with the people living beside us is changing.

A new survey published by home insurance comparison site Chill reveals that nearly two-thirds of Galway homeowners are unhappy with their relationships with them.

Chill surveyed 2,000 people and asked how they feel about the relationships on their doorstep and the problems they have experienced, offering insight into what neighbourly life really looks like in Ireland today.

However, Galway residents report some of the lowest levels of neighbourly disputes, with over 40pc respondents saying they have not experienced any of the listed issues.

When disputes do arise, noise complaints are the most common, reported by almost 15pc of residents, with parking issues being the second most common source of tension.

According to the survey, other regular occurrences that raise tension between Galway households include toys ending up over fences (12.26pc), nosiness and the use of intrusive security cameras (8.81pc), and unwanted smells between properties (9.12pc).

Most Galway residents prefer to resolve neighbourly disputes directly, particularly over noise (53.19pc) and parking problems (60.47pc), while issues involving property or safety are more likely to be escalated to the council or gardaí.

Dublin residents report the highest levels of neighbour issues, with only 32.5pc saying they have never experienced a problem. In contrast, Galway (42.5pc) residents are more likely to say they have had no disputes.

Ian O’Reilly, Head of Personal Line Sales, said: “If a neighbour damages your property, document everything and speak to your insurer before the issue escalates. Clear communication and good evidence are key to resolving disputes without unnecessary stress or expense.

“Neighbour issues usually begin with something small, but can escalate quickly when property or safety is involved. A fallen tree, a damaged fence or even a misplaced DIY project have the ability to become more than a neighbourly misunderstanding.

“These situations often involve questions of liability, and that is where insurance plays a vital role. Understanding your policy helps avoid confusion and keeps disputes from spiralling. Clear communication and an understanding of home insurance in Ireland can make it much easier to resolve disputes before they become stressful or costly.”
