Drops of God is continuing to win over critics with season 2. The show, which is a Japanese-French-American co-production, is based on the manga of the same name and follows a group of people fighting to inherit an estate that includes an expensive wine collection.
Drops of God season 1 debuted in 2023 and was a major critical success. In addition to earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, season 1 of the Apple TV series won the International Emmy Award for Drama Series in 2024. In May 2024, the series was renewed for season 2, which premiered on January 21, 2026.
Just a few days after its premiere, Drops of God season 2 has received enough reviews from critics for it to earn an official Rotten Tomatoes score. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, it has a stellar 86% aggregated from seven different reviews, bringing the show’s overall average score to 93%.
Critics warn that there are some major tonal shifts in the new season, and that they won’t appeal to all audiences (in fact, these shifts are what earned the season its first and so far only Rotten review). However, for the most part, season 2’s individual positive reviews are just as glowing as the reviews for season 1. Of the three reviews that gave it scores out of five, one gave it four and one gave it five.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen if Drops of God is able to continue for another season, as its viewership can’t quite compare to that of Apple TV’s more popular series, which include the sci-fi drama Severance, the Monsterverse spinoff Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and the Golden Globe-winning Vince Gilligan series Pluribus.
While season 2 can’t quite compare to the Rotten Tomatoes score earned by the debut season, which made Drops of God one of Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed TV shows of 2023, it still has a chance of earning a third season if audiences enjoy it just as much as critics currently are.
In addition to its strong reviews potentially helping to put more eyes on the series, the budget for Drops of God is considerably lower than the sci-fi series that the Apple TV platform is best known for, which means that it needs a much smaller return on investment in order to be considered a hit.
