Further flooding may be possible as more rain is expected.

There has been extensive flooding as a result of Storm Chandra, and as another 100-150mm of rain likely in the coming days, the flooding issue may be exacerbated. Alongside the rain, temperatures overnight may drop.

According to Weather Alerts Ireland, there is a risk of black ice forming, due to low temperatures on wet ground. “Overnight temperatures will drop to around freezing or just above in many parts. There is a risk of black ice forming as temperatures on roads are forecast to drop below freezing,” the page shared.

Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s Weather Channel said that rain has been falling on saturated ground, leading to the issues with flooding: “Exceptionally wet conditions and of course given that we’ve had rain for the past two weeks it means that the ground has been saturated so any additional rainfall was going to run off, it was going feed into the river systems and it was going to lead to extensive flooding as we witnessed in for example many parts of South Dublin, parts of Wicklow and into Wexford as well,” he said in a forecast via Facebook.

“In terms of the outlook, it is expected to continue. At least based off the GFS. It’s given much more in the way of heavy rain as we continue for the next 7-10 days. Another 100-150mm quite likely during that period, into parts of the South East and East in particular. That is certainly not going to be welcome news and could exacerbate flooding,” he added.

“The ECMWF2C then toys around with the idea of getting colder perhaps in the weekend with our winds going more so into an easterly direction. That would be good news in terms of the flooding, it would dry things out but it could very well lead to a cold spell and some wintry hazards. So that is one we’re monitoring at the moment to see exactly which is going to win out.”

“Hopefully we see the easterly wind taking hold, drying things out and even some cooler, perhaps more settled weather for the majority of the country. In terms of the forecast in the immediate sense it’s more in the way of showers tomorrow and similarly on Thursday but there will be some drier brighter interludes. Good news in terms of those flood levels it may start to dissipate just a little bit even though river levels are still rising at the moment as all the water flows off the mountains so in areas like Enniscorthy and areas like up into County Down as well in particular where we’ve seen that extensive flooding even into parts of South Dublin as well.”
