Emergency services are at the scene of a second collision in Navan, Co Meath this evening.

The second collision took place on the R147 Dublin Road in Navan around 7pm between two vehicles. Emergency services, including the fire brigade and gardaí attended the scene, and traffic diversions are in place.

It follows a major search and rescue operation in the centre of Navan town earlier which has been stood down after several hours.

Emergency services were scrambled after receiving reports of that a child was in the river at Newbridge, also known as Loreto Bridge, following a crash this afternoon. However, these reports turned out to be a false alarm.

A Coast Guard helicopter, Meath River Rescue boats, gardaí, fire brigade and other emergency services were deployed in response to the incident, with surrounding roads also closed as a result.

There had been a minor crash involving four cars on the bridge this afternoon, with no injuries reported. One of the cars was later seen being towed away.

However, the Irish Independent now understands that a call to rescue services after the crash claiming that there was a child in the river, were incorrect.

Gardaí confirmed that a report was made that someone had possibly entered the water, but following enquiries they said the search was stood down.

In a statement, Meath River Rescue said it had “received a call from a member of the gardaí at 2:48pm of a person may have entered water after a short search was stood down as a false alarm.”
