ITV has confirmed the release date for its upcoming Manchester-set thriller Betrayal, and fans of Endeavour actor Shaun Evans only have a week and a bit to wait. The first episode will premiere on ITV1 at 9pm on Sunday, 8 February, with episode 2 airing at 9pm on the very next day.

The four-part series follows Evans’ character John Hughes, an MI5 officer with a crumbling marriage who is tipped off about an informant who could help him take down a criminal gang in Stockport.

However, the planned meeting soon goes nuclear as the informant is killed by an assassin, who John manages to kill before he get silenced himself.

John’s superiors place him under internal investigation, and he starts to wonder if the call to silence him is coming from inside the house.

Is he just paranoid, or is he really onto something? Well, the show is called Betrayal…

Evans said that he wanted the show to stand out from other spy thrillers, stating: “It’s about someone having a midlife crisis. Things are no longer working for John and he’s trying to find a way forward.

“His relationship is falling down around his ears, and he no longer has the respect at work for his maverick qualities. His body is beginning to fail and his currency in the world is changing.

“If you set that against the world of international espionage, it becomes a very interesting dual story.”
