With more and more people from outside of Ireland trying to claim our sweet, sweet nationality through their ancestry, some people are becoming accidentally Ireland.

Of course, the colour scheme that we have for our flag (that we accidentally share with the Ivory Coast) is probably the most identifiable one — with the iconic green, white and orange being too hard to ignore worldwide.

As a result, there are Irish flags everywhere for the world to see — whether on purpose or otherwise — with a page on Instagram highlighting the brilliance of what being Accidentally Ireland could be.

Of course, green, white and orange aren’t exactly rare colours, making them incredibly easy to spot in the wild, and whenever you do see them close together, you’d easily end up thinking of the tricolour.

Those colour schemes can be found in spades on Accidentally Ireland — where people send in submissions ranging from two celebrities in green, white and orange, to broccoli, carrots and parsnips at a veg market, reminding us of home.

While some celebrities, including a green-coat-wearing A$AP Rocky and his white and orange-wearing partner Rihanna, may be blissfully unaware of such a page existing, it was brought to the attention of comedian James Acaster when he and Ed Gamble hosted Joy Crookes on the Off Menu podcast.

Joy — a British singer-songwriter who, coincidentally, has a father from Dublin — pointed out that James was wearing a green jumper, orange pants, and was holding a white mug, with her remarking that she immediately needed to take a picture of him to send to the page.

‘Have you heard of the Instagram page Accidentally Ireland,’ Joy asked James while Ed started laughing.

‘No… what’s that?’ he asked, before having a photo taken of him.

Ed remarked that since he’s a white guy in green and orange, he might have qualified without the mug, but Joy pointed out that he would have needed to be wearing a crop top in order to become accidentally Ireland; with James immediately joking: ‘I know I made a mistake this morning getting dressed. I should’ve put the crop top on.’

‘I’ve never been happier to accidentally be a country than Ireland,’ he added, with the clip — which aired back in November of last year — being shared on the Ireland subreddit earlier this week.

‘What a lovely video. Wish more posts were silly fun stuff and not about US politics or the world falling apart. More memes and cat videos,’ one wrote, while another added: ‘thank god he wasn’t accidentally Northern Ireland.

Another pointed out that maybe he was accidentally in a very different country, commenting: ‘Accidentally India with the ginger hair, white skin and green shirt.’
