ARLO’S GIRL had a next-time-out winner behind when running out a ready winner of a Lingfield novice over this trip last summer and, open to improvement back from a break, she may well be up to conceding the weight all round and making it two from two. Von Trotter finished a good second over this course and distance six weeks ago and is an obvious threat. Blue Deveron is a newcomer worthy of a second look.
TONAL has thrived since returning to the all-weather in recent months, winning four of his last five starts, and the manner of his success at Wolverhampton four weeks ago suggests he can win again. He was readily on top at the line on that occasion having travelled well throughout, just pushed out under a hands-and-heels ride in the closing stages and value for more than the winning margin. A subsequent 6 lb rise should be within his compass and another bold show is forthcoming. Frostmagic and Hale End look the chief threats.
BETTIES BAY is yet another horse that James Owen has revitalised, winning both starts for the yard, and she can complete a hat-trick turned out under a 5 lb penalty. The runner-up met some trouble in running while she kicked several lengths clear in the straight, so while she may have been a little fortunate on the day, there’s no reason why she won’t go well again, and her capable apprentice offsets her penalty with his 5 lb claim. Twilight Madness and Good Earth are a couple of potential threats.
BRAZILIAN ROSE had fallen down the weights, but she came into her own around this time last year, and she is seemingly thriving again, winning her last two starts at this track, including one over course and distance. She coped well with the drop to six furlongs last time, winning cosily, and a 5 lb penalty shouldn’t be enough to prevent her completing a hat-trick. Express Train and Grabajabba are potential dangers.
A penalty forces DOWN TO THE KID into a better race, but to say he’s a Southwell specialist would be an understatement (he’s an eight-time winner at this track) and he won with enough in hand last week to suggest he’s up to completing a hat-trick under a penalty. This is a good-quality contest, though, with Talis Evolvere and Legal Reform (a stablemate of the selection) also of serious interest.
There are a few in with chances in this open handicap over a mile and three quarters, but PLEASANT MAN captured this prize a year ago and looks primed for another bold showing after his eye-catching third at Chelmsford a fortnight ago when not enjoying the rub of the green. Moon Sniper is feared most on the back of a good third at this course last time out with Aajej and Military Cross all in the mix too.
A competitive handicap, but TIME TURNER arrives on the up so is fancied to defy a 5 lb penalty for his recent Newcastle victory where he had a bit more in hand than the official margin suggests, likely at the chief expense of Rogue Identity, who rates a big threat after an encouraging effort at Lingfield last time out. Chelmsford City scorer Beachborough Girl can also play her part, while Naughty Niall and Rubellite need factoring in too.
