Bundee Aki’s suspension has thrown another spanner in the works for an already depleted Ireland squad ahead of the Six Nations.
The Connacht centre was handed a six-game ban, with two of those suspended, for “verbal abuse and disrespect” towards the officials of last Saturday’s defeat to Leinster.

It means he will miss the first three games of the Six Nations, including the trips to Paris and London, a major blow for Andy Farrell.
Aki has received criticism for his actions, but they are indicative of a worrying trend in Irish rugby of late.

Ian Madigan critical of larger issue in Irish rugby
Former Ireland fly-half Ian Madigan was on punditry duty for Premier Sports on Saturday as Connacht took on Zebre in Italy.
Stuart Lancaster was left without the services of Bundee Aki, serving the first of his four-game suspension.
“You look at, across the provinces, how the players are speaking to the referees” 🗣️@Ian_madigan and Gavin Duffy discuss Bundee Aki’s four-game ban for verbal abuse of match officials and whether Ill discipline is an issue across the Irish provinces 😬 pic.twitter.com/XtBjj10pjJ

Naturally, the pundits discussed the issue, and Madigan said it was indicative of a larger problem with discipline in the Ireland squad.
Madigan said that it was clear the IRFU were laying down a marker that the growing disrespect towards referees of recent years will not be tolerated, and said players needed to do better across ‘all four provinces.’
I think it’s indicative of the discipline across all four provinces and the Irish discipline.
One of the stats that really stood out to me when I was diving deep into it during the week; leading up to the 2023 World Cup and at the World Cup itself, of the 29 games Ireland played in, they gave away three yellow cards. Since the 2023 World Cup, there’s been 22 games, we’ve given away 22 yellow cards. We’ve gone from 10% to effectively 100%.
Then you also look at, across the provinces, how players are speaking to the referees. It’s combined with referees putting their foot down and saying, ‘We’re not taking this anymore.’ I’m completely in favour of it.
I think the IRFU have taken a stance on it and said, ‘We need to put a marker down. Our discipline hasn’t been good enough and we need to progress.’
I think we’ll see a change within the camp and maybe we’ll just see the captain speaking to the referee. We’re certainly not winning them over in games.
The stat of Ireland’s growing indiscipline since the 2023 Rugby World Cup is an extraordinary one, but it is hard to argue with Madigan’s point that this issue has been worsening for some time.
Bundee Aki’s Connacht and Ireland teammate Mack Hansen was at the centre of a similar incident this time last year, and the likes of Caelan Doris and Tadhg Beirne (among others) have had run-ins with officials in recent months.
It is clear that something needs to change, and it appears the IRFU are not waiting around to fix it.
