Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Coronation Street star Sue Devaney, who plays beloved character Debbie Webster, has revealed a secret layer to her dramatic Corriedale scene. Last month, the soap confirmed one of its biggest fan theories after revealing that Debbie is actually the biological mother of her brother Carl.
While only viewers are aware of her secret at the moment, next week’s scenes will see Debbie finally reveal the truth that Carl is her son.
Speaking recently, Devaney said that Debbie intended to tell Carl she was his mother when she got into the car with him at the beginning of the Corriedale crossover.
Asked if she was planning to tell Carl before they got into the horrific crash, which caused Billy Mayhew’s death, Devaney said Debbie was waiting for the right moment.

“Yeah, I think she’s always been waiting for the right moment, and I think because she’s been diagnosed with dementia, she wants to tell the truth before she forgets the truth. And while she can still tell him the story, and she still knows the story,” she said.
She continued: “At that moment, when she was in the car, there was a feeling that she was about to tell him something, almost to try and stop him doing what he was doing. I think she’s been wanting to tell him a few times, and she just doesn’t find the right time.”

On why she thinks Debbie is ready to reveal the truth now after hiding it for so long, Devaney said: “I think she compartmentalised it. This happened such a long time ago, where she gave birth to him, and then watched him grow up, seeing his dad and Elaine bringing him up. And I think in her head, she thought, ‘yeah, he is my brother.’ It’s the story that you tell yourself.
“She thought he was being brought up well. At the time, she was 16, 17, she couldn’t look after him. And it’s only when she was told, ‘your life has got an ending’ that, and he was there in her life, and it brings back a lot of old memories. The truth has got to come out now.”
Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
