Recent research has identified ten baby girl names that are slowly falling out of favour with parents, and could go extinct

Selecting a name for your newborn can prove challenging, particularly when seeking something meaningful. Yet new research reveals several girls’ names facing potential extinction in the years ahead, as their popularity continues to wane.

Gift retailer Personalisedbee examined data from recent ONS baby name statistics, pinpointing the top 10 names that have tumbled in the rankings between 2023 and 2024, forecasting which are most at risk of dropping from this year’s 100 most popular girls’ names.

The company disclosed that some entries included previous favourites, such as Scarlett, a formerly popular option, which is gradually losing favour with parents.

Among the most overlooked names are some relatively recognisable choices, yet they aren’t withstanding the passage of time like others.

Personalisedbee disclosed that the top three girls’ names potentially facing extinction this year are Jessica, Lola, and Scarlett. The retailer highlighted that Jessica has plummeted 12 positions in merely one year, sliding from 83rd to 95th.

The name was given to 573 infants in 2023, dropping to 483 in 2024, indicating this formerly timeless favourite is steadily losing ground. Lola has likewise declined in popularity, dropping eight positions, from 79th to 87th, reports the Express.

595 newborns received the name in 2023 compared to 543 in 2024. Personalisedbee observed that even contemporary, playful names can slowly lose their appeal.

The other declining name is Scarlett, which dropped seven positions, from 72nd to 79th. Once a fashionable option, the name dropped from 634 babies in 2023 to 610 in 2024, showing a gradual fall as parents seek out newer alternatives.

Prashant, a naming specialist from Personalisedbee, has offered insights into why certain names are losing their appeal: “Names are a lot like trends in fashion or home décor.

They can rise quickly when they feel fresh or modern, but just as fast they can fall out of favour as parents hunt for something new and unique.”
