Jim and Josie Brady from Co Cork

Heartbreaking tributes are pouring in for a Cork couple who have taken “their final journey together” after they both passed away within hours of each other.

Jim and Josie Brady, from Glanmire, died peacefully at Cork University Hospital on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. The couple were deeply involved in the local community and their deaths have impacted many in the village and the surrounding areas. Locals have shared heartfelt messages about the pair online – saying there was “very rarely one without the other” and describing Jim and Josie as “the most wonderful neighbours and friends.”

The couple’s RIP notice states they are the “dearly loved parents of Gerard, Mary, Michael, Ann and Seamus,” adding: “Jim will be sadly missed by his loving family, brother Tommy, sisters Sr. M. Immaculata (Bridget) and Mary and is predeceased by Willie and Michael. Josie will be sadly missed by her loving family, brothers Eamon and Olan, sister Mary and is predeceased by Michael and Richie.”

Jim and Josie will also both be dearly missed by sons-in-law Tomás and Fin, daughters-in-law Ann, Marie-Elena and Mags, grandchildren Alan, James and his wife Aoife, Meghan, Colin, Ciara, Laura, Ali, Jessie, Kelly, Sarah, Matt, Hazel and Barry, great-grandchild Cadhla, relatives, neighbours and friends. They are also predeceased by their grandchildren Joseph, Caileigh and Emma.

A number of Glanmire community groups have shared condolences for Jim and Josie’s loved ones on social media to support them during this difficult time. A spokesperson for the Sarsfields Camogie Club said they “can’t imagine” how hard it was to lose both of them so close together – but added they “hope it is some consolation knowing they made that final journey hand in hand.”

They said: “To Ger, Mary, Michael, Ann, Séamus and extended Brady and Farrell families, We send our sincerest condolences on Jim and Josie’s passing… We think also of all their grandchildren and especially Jessie, Kelly, Laura, Ciara, Sarah and Hazel whom (like their moms and dad) played such big parts in the Club down through the years. Codladh Sámh Jim and Josie.”

Other mourners remembered Jim and Josie’s many contributions to the local community. One Glanmire local wrote: “Deepest sympathies to Gerard, Ann and the extended Brady families on the passing of your dear parents Jim and Josie. They were such a lovely couple, naturally kind and caring. They were a large part of Upper Glanmire Community and were wonderful volunteers in the setting of Scoil Naomh Micheàl. Josie was always happy to share her knowledge of local history too. May the wonderful memories of past times bring you comfort in the days ahead. They take their final journey together. May they rest in peace. Together as they always were.”

Another said: “I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of Jim and Josie. It’s so sad, and yet so lovely, that they’re continuing their journey together. I’ve almost always referred to them collectively as ‘Jim and Josie’, very rarely one without the other. For so many years they have been wonderful neighbours and friends to my parents, and I’ll always remember Christmas visits to their house – playing board games in their front room – and chats over tea and cake at stations in my parents’ house. Such genuinely lovely, strong, kind, supportive people, and both a very important part of our community. I hope that happy memories will sustain their family in their grief. One more wrote: “Sincere sympathy to Seamus and the extended Brady family on the sad passing of your parents , Jim and Rosie. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. May their gentle souls rest in peace.”

A joint funeral was held for Jim and Josie on Friday in St. Michael’s Church in Upper Glanmire, with the couple laid to rest together at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Kilcully. Donations, if desired, are asked to go towards the CUH Charity.

May Jim and Josie rest in peace.
