Athlone Town’s European run has come to an end after defeat to Glasgow City in Lissywoolen.
Trailing 3-0 from last week’s Europa Cup first qualifying round first leg, a 3-0 home defeat – the opener scored by Ireland international Emily Whelan – spelled the end of a swashbuckling run in Europe for the Westmeath club.
Whelan scored her first goal of the season to put the tie out of Athlone’s reach on 33 minutes with a close-range header.
A second-half double from Nicole Kozlova made it a tough night for the midlanders, who will now turn their attentions to the domestic League and Cup double.
Town are currently top of the Women’s League of Ireland Premier Division and booked their place in the FAI Cup final after beating Shamrock Rovers last weekend.
