The urgency of tackling Ireland’s biodiversity loss crisis was made clear at the end of 2025, when the Government published The Status of EU Protected Habitats and Species in Ireland, 2025 report, known as the Article 17. It found that 90pc of Ireland’s protected habitats are in ‘unfavourable’ conservation status, while 51pc are showing deteriorating trends.

However, in recent years, Ireland has seen a number of notable success stories for species conservation. Here are three heartening examples.
