The trailblazers of indigo double denim, girl band B*Witched took the charts by storm seemingly from nowhere in the mid-nineties. Twin sisters Edele and Keavy Lynch, Lindsay Armaou and Sinéad O’Carroll became the first group in history to have four debut UK number one singles, with C’est la Vie, Rollercoaster, To You I Belong and Blame It on the Weatherman.

Their overnight success was as much a surprise to them as anyone else, particularly when within a year they were supporting N Sync on tour. “It took us by surprise,” said Keavy – whose brother is Shane Lynch of Boyzone fame. “We were just four girls with a little dream in Ireland and suddenly it was like, ‘This is actually happening.'”

Established in 1997, they achieved global success and their music was omnipresent, even featuring in films such as What Women Want, The Princess Diaries and hit US TV show Dawson’s Creek. However, as quickly as it began, it ended and in 2002 despite selling more than three million albums, the group were abruptly dropped by their record company, leaving the quartet stunned as they grappled with the shock.

Edele commented: “It’s indicative of how the industry was. We were dropped after selling an unbelievable amount of records that are really difficult to sell now. People don’t sell a tenth of it and still have hits and careers. But it’s just how it was.”

In 2012, B*Witched reunited for the ITV2 reality-documentary series The Big Reunion alongside other groups from their era including Liberty X and Atomic Kitten. Following “clear the air” talks to address lingering tensions from their separation, overwhelming demand led them to embark on an arena tour.

The following year saw them release a fresh track, Love and Money, subsequently followed by the EP Champagne or Guinness.

Marking their 25th anniversary, they dropped a new single in 2023 titled Birthday, leaving fans astounded when television appearances showcased their seemingly timeless looks and vigorous dance sequences harking back to their heyday. The 2024 EP Ripped Jeans arrived featuring three brand new tracks.

Here’s what became of each member following their break up and their current endeavours….

Lindsay Armaou

Lindsay, now 47, stepped away from public life for seven years before pursuing acting training at The Poor School in London. Her return to performing came in 2013 with appearances in two short films: Threads and Rescue Me. The subsequent year brought a role as Georgina in The Smoke, followed by portraying Sonia in 2015’s Daisy.

Lindsay has also graced the stage in various theatre productions including Ring Round the Moon, Habeas Corpus, The Cherry Orchard and A Christmas Carol.

She recently appeared in the popular Netflix series Stay Close. The drama is adapted from a novel of the same name by Harlan Coben and features James Nesbitt and Richard Armitage.

In January 2025 she participated as a contestant on BBC quiz show Celebrity Mastermind, presented by Clive Myrie. Her specialist subject was the Irish playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh, reflecting her passion for theatre.

Lindsay tied the knot with 911 singer Lee Brennan in 2006 but they separated five years later. In October 2015 she wed recruitment director Indi Pahl, with whom she has a daughter, Sophia Helena Pahl, and a son, Ayrton.

Edele Lynch

Now aged 46, the Dublin-born star swapped her signature brunette hair for blonde, unlike her identical twin Keavy, who retains her characteristic dark locks.

Songwriter and lead vocalist Edele stayed in the music industry and co-penned Some Kind Of Miracle for Girls Aloud’s debut album Sound of the Underground. She has also written songs for the Sugababes, and formed a duo with Keavy, performing as Ms Lynch and later the Barbarellas between 2009 and 2012.

She has also appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and won Celebrity Apprentice Ireland in 2013.

However, despite her success, Edele found herself in a difficult situation when her seven-year marriage to Michael Barrett ended in 2014. The mother-of-three confessed to drinking shots of vodka in an attempt to ‘take the edge off’ the pain, revealing she would pull her hair out and hit herself in the head.

She confessed: “I was finding it really hard to deal with. I remember waking up every morning just wanting to just even take a few shots of vodka so nobody would smell it on my breath. It would take the edge off and no one would know and I could survive the day easier.”

During a conversation with her bandmates on their podcast, Starting Over with B*Witched, she revealed that the situation frightened her.

Keavy and Edele Lynch as the Barbarellas

Keavy and Edele went on to perform as Barbarellas

“I was very frustrated as well because all I felt like doing was just screaming and shouting and there’s so much anger and turmoil inside you – like where does that go?” she expressed.

“On reflection it was self-harm. I started pulling my hair, pulling my hair out, punching myself in the head so nobody would notice the bruises or punching myself where people wouldn’t see and at the time that was all just a way of trying to cope for me and I didn’t see it for what it was at the time, but I was just drowning. Completely drowning.”

Edele, who posts clips on her TikTok account featuring the group and her studio sessions, has additionally retrained in acting, though she was compelled to secure an administrative position during lockdown simply to survive financially.

Speaking on Virgin Media One’s Elaine Show, she explained: “Truthfully just to pay the bills, I’ve actually taken an admin job for the past year. We literally have nothing on the go and no support at all in our industry. I have three children and so I have to be realistic and bring some kind of pennies through the door. I’m an admin whizz at the minute!”.

Sinead O’Carroll

By her own account, when the band broke up Sinead was prepared to establish a stable life, marry and begin raising a family regardless. Sinead, 52, married Mike Rahman in June 2006, and the couple welcomed their son, Blake, and daughter, Samarah.

However, whilst her domestic life progressed smoothly, the performer recognised it was time to address her psychological wellbeing. For years throughout the band’s existence and beyond, she endured phobias so debilitating they prevented her from sleeping.

As a youngster, she would awaken terrified during the night, certain that an intruder would break into the house. As an adult, her anxiety expressed itself through a fear of dogs, among other concerns. Following a miscarriage, the situation deteriorated further.

Sinead revealed to the Irish Sunday Mirror: “I hated staying in hotels by myself. I don’t feel safe, I always would knock on Edele’s door and say, ‘can I bunk in here?’ It was like I was up all night, then going to bed, travelling home and schoolhouse and kids. By Wednesday I would be in bits. I just felt uneasy all the time.”

A recommendation to try EFT – emotional freedom techniques – proved transformative for her. The method combines acupressure with repeated affirmations to soothe anxiety.

“I went for three EFT sessions and I found it incredible. You go on a journey with your phobia or fear and it gives you the power over it,” she said. “I do distance healing for the B*witched girls. Years ago when I first got into it, the girls would ring me up about stuff, but we’re all deep thinkers really. It’s my only other interest, we’re all constantly changing, we’re always all on a self awareness journey and nobody has it all worked out, I love numerology too.”

Last July Sinead announced the heartbreaking news that her father had passed away. She wrote on Instagram: “Today I said goodbye to my beautiful dad. You were my person, my safe place, your legacy is your patience, kindness, support, generosity and wisdom. What a beautiful send off with all your family and friends around you. You loved us all so much. We loved you. May you rest in peace. My gentle man.”

Keavy Lynch

Keavy struggled immensely with the separation, with Sinead revealing to the Irish Mirror how her bandmate experienced a ‘nervous breakdown’. Discussing the distressing period, Keavy, 46, explained how she frequently lacked the strength to rise from bed following years of feeling as though she existed in her twin sister’s ‘shadow’.

“I went through severe depression. For the first two years I just sat on my sofa and cried nearly every day,” Keavy revealed to the Daily Star Sunday in 2007. “I had no motivation and just felt awful about the whole thing. A lot of days I literally didn’t want to get out of bed.

“Up until last year I was really messed up. I didn’t like myself. I didn’t know who I was and I just could not get to grips with myself. It was horrible. I thought about ending it all. But I would never do that to my family and friends.”

Keavy ultimately received the support she required and currently operates her own private counselling service in London for survivors of rape and sexual violence.

She wed husband Nathaniel Comer in May 2017 and they share daughter Freya, alongside twins Felix and Elàna. The pair regrettably separated and were formally divorced as of 2023.
