Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga made his Bollywood debut with Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor, a film that went on to become one of the most talked-about releases of 2019. When Vanga returned with his second Hindi directorial, Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, the 2023 release emerged as a blockbuster despite polarising reactions. Following the film’s success, a section of viewers speculated that a cameo appearance by Kabir Singh in Animal would have been an interesting crossover.
Shahid Kapoor confirms Kabir Singh cameo was considered initially for Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal: “Dates ka issue ho gaya”
It now appears that the idea was briefly explored by the makers. Shahid Kapoor has revealed that he was approached for a cameo in Animal during its early stages. The actor shared the detail while promoting his upcoming film O’Romeo.
Shahid said director Sandeep Reddy Vanga had considered connecting the worlds of Kabir Singh and Animal through a short appearance, intended as an Easter egg rather than a narrative shift. Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, Shahid said, “Jab Animal bhi ban rahi thi, actually Sandeep had come to meet me. He wanted one scene of Kabir to be there in that, but woh ho nahi paaya… Kuch dates ka issue ho gaya, koi dusra issue ho gaya. But yes, he had said that I want one scene. Phir wo hua nahi.”
According to Shahid, the cameo was discussed during the initial scripting phase. However, as Animal took shape, the idea no longer aligned with the emotional and dramatic arc Vanga was building. While the crossover could have been an engaging moment for fans, the team ultimately decided to retain Animal’s standalone identity.
“It was considered initially, but eventually it was not included,” Shahid said, offering insight into the creative decision-making process behind large-scale films. He added, “Woh dono characters unke hain, woh duniya unki hai. Toh unke saath unko joh mann mein aayega karne ke liye, wo karenge.”
Shahid Kapoor is now set to return to the big screen with O’Romeo, where he stars opposite Triptii Dimri, who also featured in Animal. Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor has a busy slate ahead with projects including Ramayana and Love & War. Adding to Animal’s global journey, the film is also gearing up for a theatrical release in Japan.
