Liam Brereton (18) suffered life changing injuries in the accident two months ago.

The young man – from Drom in Tipperary – is recovering from his injuries at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.

Such were the extensive nature of Liam’s injuries that he will be reliant on a wheelchair – and his home now requires major modifications given his mobility limitations.

Liam is an agricultural student at Kildalton, Co Kilkenny.

Friends, family and neighbours have rallied to his aid following the devastating accident.

A special GoFundMe campaign was launched to support the young man and his family – and organisers have been stunned by the overwhelming response.

“A farmer, a hurler, a quick witted and hilariously funny person, Liam does not have a bad word for anyone,” an appeal organiser said.

“Liam was involved in a devastating car accident that has had lifelong and devastating consequences for him.

“Despite his extensive injuries Liam has shown immense spirit, strength, and unbelievable determination to live his life. Liam is refusing to give up. He is fully committed to doing everything he can to recover, adapt and rehabilitate.

“The treatment he is undertaking (at Dun Laoghaire) ensures he pushes himself physically and mentally to achieve the best possible outcome. His motivation is inspiring to everyone around him.

“Liam’s goals are simple but powerful: to regain as much independence as possible, to rebuild his life, and to keep fighting no matter how hard the road ahead becomes.”

Supporters have vowed to help him achieve his goal of living as independent a life as he can.

To date, over €113,000 has been raised to fund the many lifestyle changes and support Liam now requires.

These range from mobility equipment to extensive home adaptations and from specialist care to accessible transport.

It is hoped the appeal will also support the long-term provision of specialist physiotherapy and neurotherapy that Liam will require.

Liam has received incredible support from his parents, Denis ‘Miley’ and Tricia, as well as his sister, Jane.

The sports-obsessed teen has also been backed by GAA and other sporting groups across Tipperary.

A special tractor run from the Ragg in Tipperary was staged last weekend in aid of Liam’s appeal while a walkathon will take place next weekend.

A number of businesses across Tipperary have also backed the fundraising campaign.

The appeal is now just 5pc short of its initial fundraising goal.
