With Android 16 QPR3 taking another beta step closer to its release, Google has started preparing for its next beta cycle. Following the release of Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1, the company announced that the first beta of Android 17 is right around the corner.
In the last few years, Google has typically released Developer Preview builds of a major new Android release first before starting a public beta channel. But with cutting-edge Android Canary builds now available, it seems the company has changed its approach, directly jumping to public beta testing of Android 17.
While the company did not provide a concrete release date, based on the announcement, the first Android 17 beta could go live on or around February 18, the same day the Pixel 10a goes up for pre-order.
The stable build of the OS should land in June 2026, following a few months of testing and beta builds.
Google’s announcement also serves as a heads-up for Pixel owners currently enrolled in the Android Beta Program. If you don’t want to beta test Android 17 and instead plan to move to the Android 16 QPR3 stable channel without wiping your phone, leave the program now.
Do not install the downgrade OTA to Android 16’s previous stable build, as doing so will trigger a data wipe. Instead, wait for the stable QPR3 build to roll out in the next few weeks to switch channels.
If you want to downgrade immediately, you must sacrifice the data on your phone. For this, install the downgrade OTA that pops up on your phone after leaving the beta program.
Android 17 is almost here
Google says Android 17 Beta 1 will build “on top of the Android 16 QPR platform release and includes the latest bug fixes and improvements to stability and performance.” So, the first beta may not contain any radical new features or changes.
Based on leaks so far, Android 17 may follow Apple’s lead and introduce more UI blur. It could also finally separate the notification shade from the Quick Settings panel and introduce app support on the always-on display.
The next window to leave the Android Beta Program will arrive in June 2026, when the Android 17 Beta cycle nears its end.
