Donegal County Council has been asked to review the location of the pedestrian crossing at the Oatfield roundabout in Letterkenny to improve visibility for both motorists and pedestrians.

The crossing currently poses a serious safety risk, Councillor Michael McBride has warned the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Cllr McBride told a meeting on Tuesday that it would not take a huge amount of investment to move the road lining, but it would make a huge difference.

Cllr McBride said that motorists approaching the roundabout from Tesco are unable to see up De Valera road due to the wall at the former Oatfield factory site. When motorists reach the roundabout, their eyes are on the traffic coming from the right.

“You can’t really see what’s happening and by the time you turn up, if there are people crossing the road, you are absolutely on top of them,” Cllr Mc Bride.

He said it would be helpful in the short term if the crossing were moved even five to ten yards away from the roundabout.

The council’s response said that changes to this junction are on the way under the Active travel scheme.

A spokesperson said: “The NTA Active travel scheme for the Ballyraine road includes the signalisation of the Oatfield junction which includes the provision of controlled crossings at this location. The Part 8 planning for this scheme was approved in 2025 and an allocation of €15,000 has been received from the NTA in 2026 to advance the scheme through detailed design stage.”
