Tonight’s Premier Division fixtures between St Patrick’s Athletic and Galway United, and Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers have both been postponed as persistent heavy rain continues to disrupt the beginning of the League of Ireland season.

The League of Ireland confirmed in a statement that the Pat’s-Galway game had fallen foul of the elements, following a pitch inspection at Richmond Park, with the surface being deemed unplayable after heavy rainfall.

A statement from Shelbourne then confirmed that a check of the playing surface at Tolka Park left the pitch unplayable.

This the second week in a row that champions Shamrock Rovers will have had a game postponed due a waterlogged pitch. Their league opener at home to Dundalk last Friday was the only victim of the weather in week one of the season. That game has been rescheduled for Monday, 23 February at Tallaght Stadium.

However, despite earlier fears, the Drogheda United-Waterford FC fixture will go ahead after the Sullivan and Lambe Park surface came through a 1pm pitch inspection.

Dundalk host Derry City in the Premier Division’s other game this evening, the home side playing their first top flight game since their relegation at the end of 2024.

The full First Division programme looks set to go ahead as planned as UCD’s game at home to Kerry – the only second-flight fixture in the capital – will go ahead after the UCD Bowl passed a pitch inspection this morning.
