RTÉ’s Carl Mullan and his wife Aisling were left frightened as their three-year-old daughter was rushed to the hospital after taking a bad fall over the weekend.

The 2FM presenter and his wife along with their three kids, Daibhi, four, Eala, three, and one-year-old Beibhinn, went on a road trip to Kinsale, however, their trip quickly took a turn for the worse. After the couple enjoyed a family day at the beach, as they headed home, Eala suffered a fall, as she propelled herself off her mum’s shoulders.

Taking to Instagram, Aisling told her followers: “Kinsale was great for the less than 24 hours we spent there. Eala and I took a fabulous trip for a two-night stay to Cork University Hospital for the rest of the weekend.

“Eala decided to set her sights on starting early training for Base Jumping from my shoulders, unfortunately, landing on solid ground on her head. Very lucky to have the highly skilled and compassionate care from the amazing nurses on Puffin Ward: Margaret, Nicola, and Jinky.

“Thanks to the ED nursing staff: Finola, Kate, Jodie- for the coffee, chats, the constant reassurance and care. You all are truly amazing!”

Carl also updated his followers writing: “We had a bit of a fright over the weekend after Eala had a very bad fall and had two nights in hospital with a concussion. Thank God, she is on the mend now and will be absolutely fine.”

The 36-year-old added: “We cannot thank the staff (particularly those in the Puffin Ward) enough, for all the incredible care she received.”

Speaking on their podcast, ‘how are ya lovie’, this week, they pair discussed the accident, saying “not a nice experience but we wanted to properly chat about Eala’s fall.

Describing the heart stopping moment, she watched her daughter fall from her shoulders after she threw herself forward, Aisling grew emotional as she described being unable to catch her, RSVPLive reports.

“I managed to turn her so she landed on the back of her head, but she did land head first on the concrete. I still have the image of the downward motion, so yea… mom guilt galore this week.”

To which Carl quickly added: “I saw it all happen. And I meant to say at the start you’re not to apologise about it, it’s one of those freak accidents and if I had been holding her the same thing would have happened. But it was desperate, there was no two ways about it, it was an awful awful fall”.

Describing the symptoms, Aisling revealed, “she was classic head injury symptoms, she was drowsy she was lethargic, she was vomiting.”

The 2FM star gave some advice for other parents saying: “If anything we’ve learnt about this about this, and just for any of you listening, I think kids on your shoulders with wellies… maybe just think about it.”

Aisling added: “Because there have been a few times, anyway, with wellies, where you don’t have a proper grip because they just come off so easy.”

Both Carl and Aisling couldn’t praise the hospital staff enough for their kindness, adding: “The Cork University Hospital and the team down there were absolutely fabulous. They were so so good. They were so, so lovely.”
