Austrian cops have launched an investigation – after an Irishman allegedly glassed two brothers who are also from here in a pub after a day’s skiing.

The incident is alleged to have happened on Wednesday night in an après ski pub in the resort of St. Anton am Arlberg, about 80 kms west of Innsbruck and close to the border with Switzerland.

Police officials said three middle aged men were involved in the incident – and all of them were Irish.

They said the incident when a 50-year-old Irishman glassed a compatriot who was 43 – in an unprovoked attack. It was unclear from the statement if the brothers knew their alleged attacker.

The Federal Police statement said: “On February 12, 2026, at approximately 8:00 PM, two related assaults occurred in an après-ski bar in St. Anton am Arlberg.

“The first assault involved a 50-year-old Irish citizen and a 43-year-old Irish citizen, in which the 50-year-old struck the 43-year-old in the face at least twice with a beer glass, seemingly without provocation, causing serious injuries.”

They said the victim’s brother then went to his aid – and the attacker went for him as well.

Officers said: “The second assault involved the same 50-year-old Irishman, who struck the 43-year-old’s brother, a 41-year-old Irishman, in the face with the beer glass.

“The brother had only tried to help his brother by punching the 50-year-old in the face at least three times.”

Cops said the bar’s security staff then intervened. The first brother was later taken to hospital in Zams, a town about 30kms away. The alleged attacker also suffered facial injuries – but he declined medical attention.

Cops said: “The situation was only defused when the bar’s staff/security intervened and separated the two parties. The 43-year-old Irishman was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Zams.

“The 50-year-old Irishman sustained injuries of undetermined severity and declined treatment from emergency services.”

The Austrian police later told The Irish Mirror that nobody had been arrested – but they were preparing a file for prosecutors.

Their statement said: “No arrests were made in this matter.

“Once the investigation is complete, a report will be filed with the public prosecutor’s office.”
