Whether it is lingering glances from behind surgical masks or the quickened heartbeat of a doctor in love, hospitals can be “whirlpools of passion”, according to a study of medical romantic novels undertaken by Dublin psychiatrist Brendan Kelly.
The Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College and consultant at Tallaght Hospital embarked on a project of reading 20 romance novels in medical settings and found even an emergency department can be fertile ground for affairs of the heart.
