Several years into the cost of living crisis and Irish shoppers are still seeing their weekly shop go up in price. New data from Worldpanel by Numerator shows grocery inflation climbed from 6.25% to 6.82% in the 12 weeks to January 25, 2026.
The figures also show that grocery sales rose by 5% in the four week period to January 25. And despite spending €1.2 billion, Irish consumers purchased 1.9% fewer items than the same period last year, a sign that rising prices may be forcing some to tighten their belts.
Dunnes Stores continues to lead the market at 24.8%, closely followed by Tesco on 24.4% while SuperValu holds 19.4%. Lidl accounts for 13.2% and Aldi 10.4%.
Store-brand products are proving popular, making up 43.4% of total grocery spend, up 0.7% compared to the previous month – with shoppers splashing over €1.7 billion on own-label goods during the 12 week period.
To illustrate how prices have changed over time, the Irish Mirror compared the cost of 18 everyday items at Dunnes Stores today with what they were in February 2022.
The shop included essentials like milk, potatoes, bread, chicken, fruit and vegetables, with the cheapest options and store brand products chosen where possible.
Four years on, the same basket now costs €7.91 more.
